Bowling Green ROTC Challenge Coin

This is the Bowling Green State University ROTC Challenge Coin.  They are the Fighting Falcon Cadet Battalion.  The program at BGSU started as an Artillery Reserve Officers Training Corps - that is, they only produced artillery officers.  Many of the first class were WWII veterans.

The front of the coin reads "BOWLING GREEN STATE UNIVERSITY / BOWLING GREEN, OH est. 1948".  In the center of a coin a shield is depicted with a black flying falcon carrying a red torch.  A scroll is below with "B" and "G" on either side, and the number 82 is stamped below that  - presumably the number of the coin in the minted set.

On the back of the coin is written "PRESENTED BY THE COMMAND TEAM / MILITARY SCIENCE AND LEADERSHIP".  The Lt. Colonel silver oak leaf insignia and the Master Sergeant stripe share center stage.

Ohio University ROTC Challenge Coin

The Ohio University, located in  southern Ohio on the shoulder Appalachia, was established in 1936 and is home to the Bobcat Battalion.  A notable alumni of the program, Brig. Gen. Jim Abraham, established a pilot program in Ohio that allowed guardsmen to join ROTC and gain a commission into the Army National Guard - this was the birth of the Simultaneous Membership Program, now a fixture of ROTC enrollment at universities around the nation.

The Challenge Coin that the program has minted is topnotch.  The coin is a brushed silver color, on the front of the coin is written "PRESENTED FOR EXCELLENCE BY THE BOBCAT BATTALION / OHIO UNIVERSITY".  A big OHIO is written across the center with the school mascot, a bobcat, featured on top.

On the back of the coin it reads "UNITED STATES ARMY RESERVE OFFICERS' TRAINING CORPS". In the center of the coin is a the second lieutenant rank aka the  "gold bar".  Inside the insignia is the Army ROTC shield with "LEADERSHIP / EXCELLENCE" written on the top and bottom respectively.

This is a great military challenge coin.  It is has some weight to it, some colors, but overall it keeps the design simple, and makes everything stand out.

Ohio State University ROTC

I received this coin when I was a cadet in the Ohio State University ROTC program. It is a coin that the ROTC Cadet Buckeye Battalion Commander was able to give out, although I don't remember getting it from him. The coin is very light and feels a little token-ish, but if you figure a cadet (aka poor college student) payed to have it minted, then it is just right.

The coin has a shiny gold appearance. Written around the front is "BIRTHPLACE OF ARMY ROTC / FORGING TOMORROW'S LEADERS", inside this is a circles that reads " OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY ROTC". There is coat of arms on the center of the coin, with the date 1810 written at the top. I am not sure what is depicted other than a buckeye leaf at the bottom (go figure).

The back of the coin has a large block 'O' with accompanying buckeye leaf in the bottom left corner and the words "COMPLIMENTS OF THE BUCKEYE BATTALION COMMANDER / RECOGNIZING LEADERSHIP EXCELLENCE".

Go Bucks!
