The front of the coin reads "III CORPS AVAITION / TF 185TH AVIATION", the phrases are separated by small III Corps emblems.  Iraq's border is pictured with "OIF2" written across the center. "BALAD" is shown above a star indicating the location of the city.

On the back of the coin is written "COMMANDERS COIN FOR EXCELLENCE / MOBILIZED DECEMBER 7, 2003", small palm trees separate the two phrases.  The Army III Corps Emblem and the US Army Aviation Insignia surround the words "FIRST NATIONAL GUARD BRIGADE LEVEL AVIATION TASK FORCE IN COMBAT", all of this in a blue background.

1-106TH Assault Helicopter Battalion Challenge Coin

This was submitted by a warrant officer who was a test pilot in OIF 2004. He recieved it from the 106th Battalion Commander.  As the story goes, while they were issuing out some coins for good performance, when his name was called, he went flying over the formation on a test flight.

It reads "In Recognition of Excellence and Outstanding Performance" along the outside perimeter.  "BLACKHORSE / 1-106th AVIATION REGIMENT" is above and below the 106th emblem, respectively.  Below the emblem is a Black Hawk Helicopter.  On the back side of the coin it reads "1-106th Assault Helicopter Battalion / Commitment to Excellence".  The state of Illinois is shown with the National Guard Rifleman, an Army Lt Colonel silver oak leaf, Sergeant Major stripes, the US Army Aviation Emblem, Army Chief Warrant Officer 4 rank, and a shield with a red eagle on it carrying a branch.

This is one hefty coin, about 2 inches in diameter.  It has cut sides and has clear enamel on both sides.  All the symology described is inlaid in a golden background.  With all the colors and contours this coin has, it easily catches the eye.
